The History of Blood Cell Labeling 1976 - 2001 The landmark events in the history of the International Society of Radiolabeled Blood Elements (ISORBE) can be traced back to more than two decades ago at the MRC Cyclotron Unit, Hammersmith Hospital in London, U.K, when Drs. John McAfee who then was at State University of New York, Syracuse, was on sabbatical leave at MRC Cyclotron Unit (July to December 1974) and Mathew Thakur surveyed more than 50 soluble and particulate agents to label human white blood cells (WBCs) with a gamma emitting radionuclide.
Bombarding
a large number of metal ions or their compounds in a fixed energy 30"
diameter cyclotron, Mathew Thakur prepared such gamma emitting radionuclides
as Fe-52, Zn-62, Rb-81, Pb-203, I-123, In-111 and Ga-67 and converted
them into a variety of suitable chemical forms for WBC labeling. Using
a generator produced Tc-99m several other compounds were also prepared.
These were then examined for labeling white blood cells separated from
plasma. The work went on non-stop for full six months, during which
time each of them donated blood every other working day. Consuming fatty
meals or even coffee or tea with cream 30 - 45 minutes prior to drawing
blood was prohibited for it retarded blood sedimentation.
It
was then Mathew Thakur's turn to go on sabbatical (June 1975 - May 1976)
to Dr. Michael Welch's group at Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology
(MIR), Washington University, St. Louis. There he choose to work with
In-111-oxine which appeared to be a most promising agent. It was in
St. Louis where the first abscess images in dogs were obtained. Furthermore,
platelets have been labeled as well with In-111-oxine and experimental
deep venous thrombosis was detected by scintigraphy. The facility was
excellent and the cooperation of Drs. R.E. Coleman, M.J. Welch and their
colleagues was outstanding. „ It turned out to be the most exciting
and highly successful year of my career. Every erperiment I did at St.
Louis was successful. I wish this could happen all the time,"recalls
Mathew Thakur. By
this time, the Diagnostic Isotopes had already begun to produce In-111-oxine
for limited supply within the USA. Supported by Diagnostic Isotopes,
Drs. Thakur, Gottschalk and Zaret organized the first symposium on radiolabeled
cellular blood elements which was held in November 1979 in New York.
This generated a tremendous impetus amongst the investigators in a variety
of disciplines throughout the world. By early 1980, at one time there
were as many as 600 Investigational New Drug (IND) applications filed
with the USA Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In 1985 In-111-oxine
was approved by the FDA as a low risk substance. ![]() Abb. LABEL ISORBE This sign has been created by Ernst Havlik, a physicist at the Department of Nuclear Medicine in Vienna, to represent ISORBE
One
day in June late in the evening the phone rang in Hehmut Sinzinger's
office; Mathew Thakur called from the States and asked him whether he
would be ready to become the next president. At the 6th International
Symposium of the ISORBE in November 1992 in Barcelona, Spain, Helmut
Sinzinger was elected to become the second President of the society
for the next three years. As the secretary for ISORBE John McAfee had
taken the membership administration task in which he did a superb job.
The logo of the meeting (the organizers offered a keyholder to all speakers)
was the basis for the ISORBE logo, finally designed by Ernst Havlik.
The first draft of it was designed together with Mathew Thakur. During the period of Helmut Sinzinger's Presidency the Society started to provide the members, for the first time, with Newsletters, which were published only at irregular intervals. Since its initiation 20 years ago, the work in the field has continued to grow. On Saturday, the 20th of August 1994, during the European Association of Nuclear Medicine Congress m Dusseldorf, Germany, the Society organized, for the first time, a pre-congress meeting, where the latest findings on imaging inflammation and vascular lesions were presented. This was followed by an extremely lively round table discussion. In the evening all the members of the board of directors attending the EANM-conference met for dinner in a delightful fish-restaurant in the center of Dusseldorf and talked on some details about the forthcoming ISORBE-meeting in 1995 at the Yale University, New Haven, USA, to be organized by Mike Ezekowitz, his colleagues and the helping hand of Paulette Trent. In
the course of the meeting at Yale University in New Haven 1995 Jose
Martin-Comin was elected unanimously to become the third president
of the ISORBE. The present meeting in Rome is organized by Alberto Signore, who is at the present time the Secretary of ISORBE. He is doing an outstanding job for the Society during the past two years and and made the Newsletters with scientific contributions, paper banks and information on forthcoming events available to the members at a regular interval. The publication of suggested methodologies for blood cell labeling and the regular appearance of ISORBE News in the European Journal of Nuclear Medicine are the closest projects. The scientific program in Rome in May 1997 is expected to be highly educational professionally beneficial and socially enjoyable. Alberto has managed to invite most prominent investigators in the field of atherosclerosis and thrombosis (Russel Ross, Valentin Fuster) and to attract a large number of abstracts. The ISORBE-family of researchers can look forward to an exciting week in Rome. Today, more than 20 years later, labeled blood cells/elements examinations are routinely practiced in most Nuclear Medicine Departments. The clinical impact of these examinations on patients management is quite important in different pathologies. Nevertheless, the research for better, more specific, simple and safe agents and techniques continues and the challenge of ISORBE is to contribute to this progress. Following Mathew Thakur's information this meeting was attended by about 60 investigators from the USA and Canada. It was organized by Drs. Thakur, Gottschalk and Zaret and fully supported by the late Mr. James Finn, president of Diagnostic Isotopes, NJ, the company which made In-111-oxine commercially available first. The company was later bought by Medi-Physics, which paid for the publication of the first book on the subject, edited by Thakur and Gottschalk. The impetus generated by the success of this meeting prompted Mathew Thakur to organize the first International Symposium on the subject in 1982. This meeting is frequently referred as the NATO- or the Maratea-meeting. This meeting, for a variety of reasons, has provided the most vivid memories to most of its participants. Despite a few unpleasant events, mostly related to the warm tropical climate in Maratea, a tiny village at the west coast of Italy, approximately 100 miles from Naples. This ten days meeting was most enjoyable, socially as well as professionally. Many participants of this meeting became life-long friends, and it may not be an exaggeration to say that it is that friendship and the loyalty to the subject matter of the meeting led to the formation of ISORBE. A large proportion of the funding for the meeting was provided by NATO, although its organizers gratefully acknowledged the support made available by Medi-Physics, Amersham International, Mallinckrodt Inc. and Beckman International. Mathew Thakur, the director, with his equally able co-directors Max Hardeman and Michael Ezekowitz, invited many prominent speakers of international reputation to give plenary lectures and encouraged many newcomers to attend the meeting. 111
Indium has been established as the radioisotope of choice for the
study of platelet and granulocyte kinetics. Mike Ezekowitz was presenting
a movie in which his technician Eileen O. Smith was showing their
optimized procedure for labeling of platelets. An intensive and sometimes
hot discussion was surrounding the optimal labeling methodology for
platelets and white blood cells. The scientific program not only included
didactic lectures and scientific presentations in a large theater
of a hotel on the top of a steep hill, 100 feet above a clean, sunny
beach but also of open ground discussions during pizza parties, soccer-
and volleyball games, during fishing trips and a trip to historical
Pompeii. The wasps and ants were also friendly: they frequently followed
the guests into their rooms, their beds, the dining hall and sometimes,
even into the sandwiches of most affectionate people like Eva Jager.
When the elevator failed, we climbed nearly 150 steps to the hotel
from the beach. When David Goodwin accidentially lost his wallet m
the sandy base of the 15 foot deep, clear blue ocean, we retrieved
it. When John McAfee lost his only pair of glasses during a boat trip,
we found them. The Italian wine regularly served at dinner time, showed
its presence in the stomachs of a few, but most did not mind it. Food
normally was served late and cold, but only a few, as eg Vera Fitscha,
managed to lose their appetite for it. The climate was perfect for, funghi
porcini", which we were enjoying repeatedly. It was the first
time the crowd discovered how avid a soccer player Jose Martin-Comin
was, and how charming Wolfgang Becker looked even then without a beard.
Mathew Thakur pretended to be busy for most of the time, but managed
to play basketball with the sleeves of his shirt rolled down to his
wrists. And so on! What a great meeting it was!

In
a memorable journey we were taken by our hosts tour to the Krueger
National Park. Starting close to midnight (i.e. 4:00 a.m) we were
driven with jeeps from Bloemfontein to the park. Immediately at the
entrance we were greeted by a family of lions, later on seeing an
impressive picture of buffalo herd, elephants, giraffes, antilopes,
hyenas. and many others. A group of monkeys we were disturbing during
their lunch time sitting on and around trees. The overnighting in
the camps including the outdoor grilling were unique events as well.
After this unforgettable trip some of us were presentmg lectures at
different places in South Africa, among them in Durban and Capetown.
We got an impression on the political situation of South A&ica
for it was the period of time where they started seriously to stop
the ethnical separation. List

9th ISORBE Congress
The 9th International Symposium on Radiolabeled Blood Elements has taken place from October 20th to October 23rd in the Campus of the Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Rio de Janeiro is a beautiful city, with famous beaches, hills, typical food, special music and with a pleasant people that live there. This was the first time that a scientific event of the International Society on Radiolabeled Blood Elements happened in Latin American. More than one hundred papers were presented as invited lectures or oral papers or posters for colleagues from several countries. There were 117 participants from Brazil and other countries far away countries as Finland, Turkey and Australia. The 9th International Symposium on Radiolabeled Blood Elements has provided an excellent opportunity for the presentation and discussion of the latest achievements of nuclear medicine techniques and radiopharmaceuticals for the study of inflammation, infection, oncology and therapy using radiolabeled blood. The topics presented as invited lectures have permitted excellent discussions: (i) basic aspects of the inflammation process and the immunogenetics in the transplantation of organ, (ii) methods and the use of labeled antibodies, peptides and white blood cells in nuclear medicine, (iii) current US regulations and pharmacy practice standards applicable to blood element labeling in a commercial nuclear pharmacy, (iv) technetium-99m-labeled biotin and infecton, (v) nuclear medicine in the evaluation of ovarian and colon and rectal cancer and radiolabeled peptides for therapy, (vi) nuclear imaging in atherosclerosis, (vii) synthetic and bioengineered products in nuclear medicine and (viii) drug interaction in the labeling of red blood cells. There was a special lecture "Have faith in your radiopharmaceuticals - The Charles Sampson Memorial Lecture". The speaker was our colleague Malcolm Frier that with a strong emotion presented this lecture to remember Charles Sampson. Dr. Mathew Thakur was the responsible of the Scientific Committee to choose the four best papers presented in the 9th ISORBE, two oral and two poster to be awarded. These were:
